Sarcasm Is My Love Language (But Words Work Too)
Meet the man behind Grit & Wit
Hi, I'm Maury.
I'm a happily married dad of four, a former teacher, a former newspaper reporter, and a current collector of stories—most of them true. My wife and kids would probably say I’m a blend of Batman, a middle school substitute, and a Chick-fil-A drive-thru speaker with a stuck sarcasm setting. That’s not entirely wrong.
I started Grit & Wit because life demands both—especially in parenting and marriage. Faith anchors me. Humor keeps me afloat. I write to encourage, challenge, and occasionally make you laugh-snort in public. Bonus points if it makes you think or feel something deep in your chest… somewhere between “amen” and “that’s too real.”
Growing up, I was always that kid with a one-liner ready. In kindergarten, I was helping wipe down desks for summer break and muttered, “It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it.” My teacher laughed way harder than I expected. That moment stuck. Apparently, sarcasm and storytelling were going to be part of the plan.
I've written devotionals, news stories, and plenty of things I’m pretty sure only my mom read. But this? This is different. This is where my love of words, heart for people, and tendency to process life through metaphor and memory all meet.
Here’s what you can expect from Grit & Wit:
Stories from the trenches of family life (both funny and painfully relatable)
Thoughts on faith and marriage without the sugar coating
Real-life devotionals with a twist of “Did he just say that?”
A few well-placed dad jokes and maybe even some tears (yours or mine)
Every story I tell starts with a memory and ends with a purpose. There’s almost always a challenge or a takeaway—because I believe words should do more than fill space. They should move you.
Thanks for being here. If you’re a parent, a spouse, a believer, or just someone who appreciates a little grit with your wit—pull up a chair. You’re in good company.
Until next time, remember—
I can only control myself.
– Maury
