I have always struggled to make sure my dependence is on God, and not my stuff, or my experience, or my own wits. Our pastor had a fly-by line in his message last Sunday that stopped me cold: "We live in padded cells in America, of our own making. We are captive to our wealth and security." Ouch. Thanks, Maury!
That's a good word. I remember something from a movie basically saying the same thing. It's like we are in a cell that we can leave until the door slams shut and it's too late.
